DERBY CITY CURLING: THE BEGINNING
In 2018, Bethaney and Brett Curry watched as Team Shuster won the first curling gold medal in US history during the Winter Olympics. Having always been intrigued by the sport, they looked for a place in Louisville where they could try it, but the closest curling club was 2 hours away. That’s when Bethaney turned, looked at her husband and said, “I want to start a curling club.” Brett looked back at her and said, “OK, let’s do it.”
Having never played before, they set out to form the Derby City Curling Club. Eight months later the first curling stone was delivered on the ice at Alpine Ice Arena. Since then the Currys and a group of local curling enthusiasts have worked to grow the game that they love.
During the club’s first season, they saw that curling was a sport that could be enjoyed by anyone. Of the more than 400 people who attended the club’s Learn To Curl classes, the youngest was 8, and the oldest was 81. They saw that they could use curling to introduce people to adaptive sports, allowing people with disabilities to play alongside everyone else.
WE LOVE OUR SPONSORS
The Derby City Curling Club is an inclusive organization that welcomes people of all ages and abilities.
We wish to teach, develop, promote and encourage interest in the sport of curling. Develop youth and adult programs that lead to local, national, and international competition. Coordinate and develop interscholastic competition, and to teach the sport to youth organizations as well as to interested adults by creating public awareness and appreciation for the sport.
