Derby City Curling Club

After watching the US Men’s Curling team win gold during the 2018 Winter Olympics, Bethaney and Brett Curry decided to try curling. They quickly found out that the closest club was a 2 hour drive from Louisville. That’s when Bethaney turned, looked at her husband and said, “I want to start a curling club.” Brett simply replied, “OK.”

Since then, relying on a philosophy of inclusivity, Derby City Curling Club has hosted hundreds of people at Learn To Curl classes. The youngest participant being 8, and the oldest, 81. We’ve held programs for adaptive curling, allowing people with disabilities to play alongside everyone else. We’ve even hosted Tyler George, a member of the US Men’s Curling team that inspired the birth of our club.

Our Mission Statement

The Derby City Curling Club is an inclusive organization that welcomes people of all ages and abilities. Through teaching, encouraging interest, and player development, we promote the sport of curling.

Our future plans involve developing youth and adult programs leading to local, national, and international competition. We will teach youth organizations and adults, creating public awareness and appreciation for curling. We also will develop interscholastic competition, as we work to grow the sport in Louisville and the surrounding areas.

Let’s Curl

Our season normally runs from late November to the end of March. We play at Alpine Ice Arena, a Louisville landmark since 1960. You can find us curling Thursdays during our member nights.

We offer Learn To Curl classes throughout the season. Classes include an overview of the sport including how teams are comprised and how scoring works. We teach you how to deliver a stone, sweeping, a little bit of strategy, and conclude with a short game among the classes’s participants.

If you’re interested in joining Derby City Curling Club, membership opens in the fall. We offer social and full memberships. To become a full member, you either need previous curling experience or have attended a Learn To Curl class. Social members can attend off-ice events, but can’t play during our members curling night. All members receive a club pin, and that season’s exclusive member swag.
